Krassimir Nenov, Executive Director, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 describers what was 2018 for the company, and its CSR impact.
What was 2018 for the company and the power station? How much electricity produced ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP? Would you tell us about any new projects the company develops at the moment in Bulgaria and in the region?
Our efforts over the last year were centered around operating the plant in a sustainable way so that it remains one of the reliable key power generators in the Bulgarian energy system. As part of these efforts we successfully completed our investment and maintenance program amounting to BGN 38 million, focused on enhancing the reliability of the main and auxiliary plant equipment.
2018 was a good year for ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP in terms of operational performance as evidenced by the high availability and efficiency of power generation. The plant produced 3.8 billion kilowatt hours. As usual, the plant was dispatched more in the fall and winter months when the demand is higher and the reliable operation of the plant is especially important for the security of supply.
Caring about our people’s health, safety, well-being and development, and of the people connected to our business underpins everything we do. We believe that all injuries are preventable therefore we pay special attention to health and safety in everything we do. One of the indicators which is indicative of our commitment to safety is that as of today more than 9.5 million man hours were worked at the plant without a lost-time incident.
In 2018 ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP produced 3.8 bn kW/h of electricity.
What is the status of the preparation of the operators of the Maritsa East Power Complex with regard the possible derogation from the new EC emissions directive?
ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 submitted in February 2018 an application to the competent Bulgarian authority for a revision to its environmental permit to reflect in an appropriate way how the plant will meet the new significantly stricter emission norms effective as of 2021. The application includes a comprehensive impact assessment by a reputable international consultant which will enable the competent authority to evaluate whether the investments to achieve the new norms are justified by the expected benefits for the public. We expect that the review will be finalized during 2019.
What are the social projects ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 developed in 2018 in both groups of stakeholders: internal – employees, and external – local communities?
In 2018 within its two main Social Investment & CSR programmes “Energy for Life” and “Power for Progress”, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 supported a series of meaningful causes and implemented several noteworthy community-oriented projects.
To name a few, I would start with the newly planned and constructed Lake Park in the “Second” Quarter of the town, which offers to the citizens and guests of Galabovo 6,500 sq.m. shady walks and resting places. The project is fully tailored to meet local residents’ needs providing fenced sport fields for the fans of mini football, badminton and others, a sand field for beach volleyball, as well as an open fitness center and imaginative children’s playground. CGME3 invested BGN 640,000 in the “Lake Park”.
English Teaching Assistant (ETA) for the vocational school of energy and electrotechnical studies
Already for a third year the Vocational school in Galabovo benefits from the activities of a dedicated English Teaching Assistant (ETA), whose main task is to improve the language skills of the students through student centered learning and performative results. The excellent opportunity to meet the business and the education and give opportunity to enhance both has been identified in collaboration with Fulbright program team and resulted in a singular for the country relationship – in 2016 CGME3 was the first and only company in Bulgaria fully supporting an ETA.
Communication system for children with special needs
In collaboration with the dedicated team of “Alternativa” in Stara Zagora, CGME3 has launched an innovative for Bulgaria and unique for the region project – ensuring access to technologies and thus – to new learning methods for children with General Development Disorders.
The world is undergoing a revolution in technology and understanding of the cognitive processes of human beings. Globally, there are a number of technologies developed that help people with mobility and mental problems to communicate through glance, using devices that are placed under the screen of a computer and specialized software, allowing for programs and applications to be managed only by targeting and detention of glance. In this way the children can learn to write, paint and most importantly – to speak through synthesized speech and to express their thoughts and feelings.
CGME3 purchased all the necessary hardware and software and ensured the training of the team specialists, that are now using it on daily basis working with the children. Alternativa, whose team provides the social services for GDD children in Stara Zagora region, performed intro tests with all children in their care that showed unexpected results and new ways for care and development.
Sport Games for People with Disabilities
For fourth year CGME3 sponsored the annual edition of a unique sport event – the Sports Games for People with Disabilities. Organized by the Union of People with Disabilities in Galabovo with the financial and logistics support of CGME3, the Games attract an ever-increasing number of participants from the region of Stara Zagora. In 2018 10 teams were formed with with nearly 100 participants with various disabilities, aged between 14 and 50 years.

The ever-growing auditorium, the modern format, the Bulgarian, Balkan and international presence each year makes us proud of supporting one of the most influential marks in the cultural calendar of Stara Zagora.

“Payroll Donation” is one of our most sustainable CSR projects for internal stakeholders established in 2014 and administered by “BCause” Foundation (also AmCham member).
The employees who want to join choose between one of 5 selected causes: scholarships for children deprived of parental care, Prevention and management of violence, Support for children with general development problems, The Green Cause supporting the activities of the WRC “Green Balkans”, Stara Zagora and Prevention of Baby Abandonment managed by the “For Our Children” Foundation.
In the end of each 6 months period CGME3 doubles the amount of the donations gathered by the employees, thus amassing more than BGN 60 000 yearly for socially important causes, recognized by both the company and the employees.
