ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 renovated 6 aviaries for endangered and sick birds

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP, one of the largest power plants in Bulgaria, completed the project for renovation of the bird enclosures at the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center in Stara Zagora.  The company renovated 6 enclosures – homes of endangered or injured birds. Which are treated and need time to recover before they are released back into the wild. Care is provided also for breeding pairs of endangered birds to enable their procreation. The project amounts to BG 23,000.

Each one of the six aviaries have an outdoor and an indoor section. There are special bird feeders with special design allowing for the birds’ independence of human help and thus easier release in the wild. The aviaries have water supply and sewage systems to make cleaning and housekeeping easier. They are equipped with video surveillance cameras to ensure the privacy of birds while they recover, breed or take care of their young.

Protection of the environment is our main priority. For years we have been supporting the Wildlife Rescue Centre in Stara Zagora because we are personally convinced in the benefit and the impact of their work. We share a common goal – preserving the beauty and diversity of Bulgarian wildlife for posterity. It is known for a fact that they help an ever-increasing number of wild animals survive and breed. We are happy that we can assist them to continue doing this” commented Krassimir Nenov, Executive Director of ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 at the official opening ceremony of the renovated aviaries.

The Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center provides shelter and care for animals from the areas of Stara Zagora, Plovdiv and Burgas. In 2017 only, the center provided medical treatment to more than 1,700 wild birds, mammals and reptiles, 90% of which belonging to endangered species. More than 58% have been successfully treated and released back in their natural habitat.

In the course of one year only over 3,000 people visited the rescue center. More than 200 school pupils and university students volunteer for the rescue center, some of them coming from neighbouring countries such as Romania, Macedonia and Turkey.
