Specialized STEM Constructors to Train and Entertain Young People in Stara Zagora’s Teen Zone

“Zachary Kniazheski” Regional Library, Stara Zagora is launching “Creators”, a specialized Club in which students from the region will be able to improve their knowledge in the fields of natural and exact sciences, development of engineering skills, study of physical laws and robotic mechanisms, as well as design and programming techniques. The STEM Corner has been set up in the library’s recently built Teen Zone, which will give young people access to specially equipped tables as well as to over 50 design kits from various scientific fields. The “CREATORS” project is implemented with the financial support of ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3.

A presentation lesson in which 9 grade students from “Romain RollandForeign Language School, Stara Zagora, participated in the launch of the STEM design club. Guests at the event were Ivanka Sotirova, Deputy Mayor Humanitarian Activities, Stara Zagora Municipality, Mihaela Miteva, Culture Department of Stara Zagora Municipality, teachers and friends of modern education.

Eng. Todor Kolev, Head of Electrical and C&I Maintenance of ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP, spoke about the varied day and professional adventures of an engineer.

“We, children and adults, are exploring the world through play, so it is important that we remain open to new ideas and interesting concepts.”

The library’s IT specialist and graphic designer, Dylan Balkanski, demonstrated special design kits – programmable robots, mechanical hoists, solar motors, electrical circuits and much more. The activities of the Creators Club will be conducted under the guidance of specialists in the relevant scientific fields. The Creators’ first meeting will take place on October 16, 2019 (two sessions from 11:00 and 15:00 hours) as part of the European Programming Week initiative. The schedule for next classes will be published on the library site and on its Facebook page.

“The STEM concept (in translation – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is globally recognized as a method that successfully blends the exact sciences with the arts, allowing students to go beyond traditional learning.

Earlier this year, Zachary Kniazheski Library in Stara Zagora opened a specialized “teen area” to welcome young people from the city. The space is stocked with computers, multimedia, e-readers, board games, books and comics that are relevant and interesting for young visitors and has excellent internet connectivity. The area also hosts a variety of youth activities and events. It is a donation from “ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” thermal power plant.

The company fully funded the repair and equipment of the hall under its social project Energy for the Library. ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 has supported the largest library in the Stara Zagora region for years. The company supports the library fund and its equipment by regularly donating new titles by famous foreign and Bulgarian authors, computer equipment and subscriptions to specialized editions.
