How Microsoft's AI Services Can Empower Employees in the Workplace

Microsoft reached a human parity milestone in 2018 when it created an AI whose Chinese to English translation was indistinguishable from a human’s.  Human parity may seem too complex for everyday applicability, but we already see some of it in action today. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said, “AI is one of the most transformative technologies of our time and has the potential to help solve many of our world’s most pressing challenges.”

There are three main ways Artificial Intelligence (AI) has crept into our lives. Personal assistants: whether you are using a device or on your phone, they are learning about you and suggesting ways to make your life easier. Shopping recommendations: know how you were considering buying something online, then saw advertisements of it in your social media feed. Chatbots: getting answers to what you want might be getting easier, if the company you need service from has a chatbot who can answer your questions with speed and accuracy.

Over 1 billion people around the world use Microsoft Office. The productivity space is one of Microsoft’s biggest priorities as a company and a core focus of this innovation is infusing Office with AI. This is the cloud-powered version of Office that is updated on nearly a monthly basis with new features. Through ethnographic studies, focus groups, and user studies Microsoft has identified 5 principles it follows when implementing AI into Office: amplify human ingenuity, embrace feeling and thinking, honour everyone, understand people in their surroundings and constantly improve.

AI in Microsoft PowerPoint is improving everyone’s presentations. With slide design for example, the AI can suggest suitable artwork for your slides, so they look even more appealing visually, based on the text you’ve put in. AI recognises what you are trying to do and offers you fully realised options like a perfect circle from your lopsided loop. PowerPoint can listen to what you are saying, caption it in English on screen and translate to the language of your choice — in real time. And the AI doesn’t only help you onsite. The Presenter Coach function can help you deliver an impactful presentation. As the name suggests, this AI feature coaches you while you’re rehearsing, providing on-screen guidance for pacing, inclusive language and filler words. At the end of each rehearsal session, you’re given a detailed report that includes metrics for additional practice.

Microsoft Teams is a chat-based digital workspace that brings internal and external teams together around chat conversations, voice and video meetings, Office documents and business applications like Trello, OneNote and Asana. Teams can quickly translate messages in channels and chats into almost 40 languages, facilitating global collaboration. Through intelligent search, you can view recorded meetings on your own time, turn on captions, and jump to any point in the conversation. Using AI and facial recognition, Microsoft Teams can also blur out the background. So, your colleagues can only see your professional image. Teams now has more than 20M daily active users (DAU), and in the last month, Teams customers have participated in more than 27 million voice or video meetings and performed over 200 million open, edit, or download actions on files stored in Teams.

You can connect Microsoft Outlook to your LinkedIn profile and email first degree contacts directly from there, just by typing their name in the To line. Even if you don’t know their email address.  Outlook saves time emailing back and forth by automatically finding and booking the best meeting room based on what it has learned about attendees, time, availability, and other preferences. In Outlook on mobile devices, 70% of more than 10 million monthly given suggestions are successfully added to the event. In Outlook on the web, 45% of over 400 million suggestions per month are accepted. For those who still can’t attend, Microsoft Stream provides a searchable, time-coded transcript where they can easily find and action relevant items.  Microsoft MyAnalytics works like a fitness tracker for work. It keeps up with the time you spend in various tasks and summarizes how much focused work you’ve been able to do. It also gives you insights and tips on how to improve.

Resume Assistant is a new feature in Microsoft Word to help Office 365 subscribers craft compelling resumes with personalized insights powered by LinkedIn. With over 80 percent of resumes updated in Word, Resume Assistant helps job seekers showcase accomplishments, be more easily discovered by recruiters, and find their ideal job.

“The growing popularity of AI in Bulgaria is creating an ecosystem that could attract international corporations and companies to invest here. AI could change how business works across all industries and our country has the potential to become a key AI market. I am proud that Microsoft is driving this process and more and more companies in Bulgaria use our AI services in their workflow,” said Kalin Dimtchev, Country Manager Lead in Multi-country Region, Country Manager Bulgaria.

AI learns and improves over time. The scope of AI will gradually expand as new functionality is added and the machine learning capability accumulates more information about our needs.
