ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP produced 14.5% of the Electricity in the State of Emergency Period

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP has produced 14.5% of the total electricity generated in the country during the two-month state of emergency imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The power plant operates efficiently and reliably, fulfilling its function to support the security and stability of Bulgaria’s energy system. In the last two months which put many companies in the country to the test, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP continued to rely on its partnership with local suppliers and subcontractors to provide the necessary deliveries and services, as well as sufficient stocks to ensure reliable operation of the power plant which directly and indirectly employs over 4,200 people. The TPP contributes more than 15% of the gross value added of the industrial sector in Stara Zagora region. It is known that “ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP is a major consumer of lignite coal from the “Troyanovo 3” pit of the Maritsa East mines which contributes to the energy independence and security of the country.

“ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” introduced strict security measures, which are observed by all who work on the power plant’s premises – restricting the outsiders’ access, keeping safe distance between the employees, wearing of protective equipment and more. The TPP has an action plan in case of changes in the epidemiological situation and has the ability to operate in complete isolation.

The power plant provides reliable electricity production for the needs of household consumers and the industry

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 owns and operates the first lignite-fired thermal power plant in Southeast Europe, which operates in full compliance with the highest European standards for occupational safety and environmental protection. The power plant annually produces 10% of the electricity in Bulgaria, using local energy sources and thus contributes to ensuring energy security and independence of the country. More than BGN 1.4 billion have been invested in ensuring the TPP’s reliable operation and in environmental protection measures. Shareholders are the international energy company ContourGlobal (73%) and the National Electricity Company (27%).
