AmCham Bulgaria’s Executive Committee had a Pre-elections Meeting with the Government

On April 1st, 2021 the Executive Committee of AmCham Bulgaria had a meeting with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Dontchev, the Minister of Energy Temenuzhka Petkova , and Minister of Economy Lachezar Borissov on the priorities of the Chamber and the future priorities of the new Government after the elections.

“I congratulate Prime Minister Boyko Borissov for ensuring political stability at the end of his term, which is very important for the business community. I hope that this political stability will continue in the future,” stated Olivier Marquette,  President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, during the meeting of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov with the Executive Committee of the Chamber.

Bulgaria has a huge potential to attract more investments,” Marquette added.

He focused on the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States, developed in recent years, and highlighted Prime Minister Borissov’s visit to the White House in 2019. The President of the American Chamber of Commerce noted that much has been done for the conditions for doing business in Bulgaria and expressed expectation that this will continue in the future.

According to him, the government has achieved great success in the field of energy  with regard to energy security and independence. “The sector was in complete disarray and, thanks to the efforts of this government, a long way has been gone.” Marquette said.

The President of the American Chamber of Commerce paid special attention to the Recovery and Resilience Fund, which provides many opportunities for development:

“I think Bulgaria can be a leader not only in the Bulgarian sector but in Europe on carbon capture and sequestration. I can tell you that as much as there are a hype around hydrogen there is also a lot of talks about carbon capture and sequestration which is the only way to get to the net-zero carbon economy by 2050.

So, I want to really urge Bulgaria to do everything possible to include this into the Resilience and Recovery Plan and would add that the U.S. department of energy has done a study for Bulgaria on CCS and I think that the U.S. side can bring a lot of support and including companies to support this.”

According to Olivier Marquette there are few very well-known facts that will help Bulgaria to reach it’s potential:

Improvement of the rule of law, fight against corruption, and overall improvement of the business climate. I think if businesses and companies feel welcome in Bulgaria with the right business environment they will come in much greater number and with much greater investments that has been the case. I think this is a great opportunity for Bulgaria and as AmCham we very much looking forward to the next government to be pro-business, because that is going to help Bulgaria to fulfill its full potential.

“We have always worked in partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce and we will continue in this direction. The United States is one of Bulgaria’s leading foreign trade partners.”, said Prime Minister Borissov.

He pointed out that despite the pandemic, the data for 2020 are optimistic – bilateral trade reaches a level exceeding USD 1 billion, which is the peak value for our mutual trade with the United States.
