Petar T. Ivanov on BNR: The Purpose of the U.S. Sanctions is to Implement Important Changes in our Country

On June 8th, 2021 Petar T. Ivanov, CEO, AmCham Bulgaria was a guest at the Bulgarian National Radio hosted by Silvia Velikova. The main topic of the discussion was the news about the sanctions from the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed on influential Bulgarian individuals and their expansive networks for engaging in corruption.

The American Chamber of Commerce is working consistently on the rule of law and the current sanctions announced by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of the Treasury won’t change our behavior and our position. They only show how important it is to have such a position and to follow your ethical beliefs. Since I became CEO of the Chamber, we have had several conferences on the rule of law and media freedom,” commented Petar Ivanov.

“The society knows what corruption is – you don’t have to read the Penal Code to understand it, but how it is judged in court, this is something completely different. The Bulgarian judiciary system is not consistent and this creates а sense of lawlessness,” said the CEO of the Chamber.

“Speculations are not important. It is important to wake up from this nap we have fallen into and realize which situation is good for us and which is not. The purpose of these sanctions is to implement important changes in our country – therefore, they are announced by the U.S. government. The problem is that we often know everything but nothing happens – this is our national characteristic,” pointed out Petar Ivanov.

AmCham Bulgaria is focused on the ethical norms when accepting new members. In the past 3 years, we have changed more than 20 clauses in our statutes in order to make the process of accepting new companies more objective and ethical.
