ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP Meets the Highest Safety and Environmental Protection Standards

“ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP meets the strictest requirements for environmental protection and occupational safety. This was revealed by the external audit of the system for management of health and safety at work and for environmental protection conducted by SGS.

During the three inspection days, all departments of the power plant, based near Galabovo, as well as the company’s office in Sofia, were audited. “ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP was successfully certified under the new standard for management of health and safety at work – ISO 45001: 2018, which replaces the previous standard OHSAS 18000: 2007. Parallelly, the power plant underwent a process of recertification of the part of the system related to environmental management according to the ISO 14001: 2015 standard. During the audit, conditions were created for the SGS team to work in maximum compliance with all anti-epidemic measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the press center of the coal-fired power plant announced.

“In recent years, we have made significant investments in the rehabilitation and improvement of our capacities. As a result, the power plant is one of the first on the Balkan Peninsula to operate in accordance with the highest requirements for environmental protection and ensuring safe working conditions. The professional world of energy hides risks, and the electricity production itself requires a special attitude towards environmental protection. That is why our company constantly invests in providing safe working conditions and in keeping the highest standards in protecting the nature around us “, said the executive director of ” ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3″ Krassimir Nenov.

In the recent years, the company has invested over BGN 1.4 billion in ecology, safe working conditions and reliable operation. Thanks to the power plant’s rehabilitation “ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP works with high-tech electrostatic filters and desulfurization plants. Nearly 100% of the emitted dust particles are being captured, while the use of fresh water and the discharge of wastewater are reduced in halve. The gypsum slurry dewatering plant guarantees the utilization of about half of the product from the operation of the desulphurization plants – gypsum, which is being sent for the production of construction materials. The good management of health and safety at work has resulted in over 14 million accident-free man-hours at work.

The team of ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP continues to strictly follow the safety procedures related to the COVID-19 epidemic. Permanent disinfection is being carried out on the power plant’s premises, the employees are provided with additional personal protective equipment, and a safe physical distance is being observed. The TPP has an action plan should any changes in the epidemiological situation occur, having the opportunity to operate in isolation, “ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” recalls.
