ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP Generates 13% of Total Electricity in the Country in the Period January 1st – September 30th, 2021

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP generated 13% of the total electricity in the country for the period January 1st – September 30th, 2021. The energy produced by the power plant is equal to the average consumption of over 1100000 Bulgarian households for the specified time interval.

The power plant meets the strictest requirements for environmental protection and occupational safety. It has been certified for years according to two international standards – ISO 14001: 2015 for environmental management systems and as well as the new ISO 45001: 2018, which concerns health and safety at work. At the end of September 2021, the power plant successfully completed its scheduled annual maintenance and made a new investment in improving its environmental performance, noting 15 million man-hours without lost time incidents.

For the last year and a half, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP has been operating in compliance with the strictest sanitary and restrictive measures that have been introduced in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. The plant has an emergency work plan in case of abrupt changes in the epidemic situation, including the infrastructural and logistical potential to operate in conditions of complete isolation.

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 owns and operates the first lignite-fired thermal power plant in Southeast Europe, which operates in full compliance with the highest European standards for occupational safety and environmental protection. The power plant generates an average of 10% of electricity in Bulgaria, using local energy sources and thus contributes to ensuring energy security and independence of the country. More than BGN 1.4 billion have been invested to ensure the reliable operation of the powerplant and in measures to protect the environment and occupational safety. Shareholders are the international energy company ContourGlobal (73%) and the National Electricity Company (27%).
