The plant invests more than BGN 10 million in its ecological installations and contributes to controlling the growth of electricity prices ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP provided almost 12% of the total electricity output in the country in 2021. This electricity is enough to cover the average annual needs of 1,235,000 households – almost half of the homes in Bulgaria. Following the modernization of the plant’s FGDs, these two key installations now provide over 97% efficient flue gas capture. Thus, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP fully meets the new, stricter environmental requirements of the EU, which entered into force in August 2021. For years, the TPP is being certified for two international standards – ISO 14001: 2015, related to environmental protection as well as ISO 45001: 2018 (OHSAS), which deals with occupational health and work safety. The TPP reports over 15 million man-hours of work without accidents.
“ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP is an important part of the country’s electricity system and has a significant role, both in times of high consumption and for the stable operation of the system, providing reliable and affordable electricity. We have proven this many times over the past year, working at full load when necessary and thus contributing to supporting efforts to curb rising electricity prices. In the new year we continue to analyze and seek solutions for the future of low-carbon energy in Bulgaria. We work with scientists from leading universities in Bulgaria, with reputable international companies, with experts and proven professionals from the country and abroad. The topic is extremely important for the country’s energy security given the important role of the Maritsa East complex for the regional economy and employment in about 60 municipalities in the country, said Krassimir Nenov, Executive Director of ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3.”
For the last year and a half, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP has been working in compliance with the strictest sanitary and restrictive measures that have been introduced in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. The plant has an emergency plan
in case of abrupt changes in the epidemic situation, including the infrastructural and logistical potential to operate in conditions of total lockdown.
ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 owns and operates the first lignite-fired thermal power plant in Southeast Europe, which operates in full compliance with the highest European standards for occupational safety and environmental protection.
