ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP Generated More Than 11% of the Electricity of the Country During the Two Pandemic Years

The power plant continues to be a reliable producer of electricity while observing the strictest safety standards

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP generated more than 11% of the electricity output for households in the country during the past two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The generated electricity equals the average consumption of more than one million households during this period, informed the press office of the company.

From the very beginning of the difficult emergency situation, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 provided everything necessary for the continuous operation of the coalfired power plant and thus contributed to the stability of the country’s energy system. The company retained its employees and achieved over 15 million accident-free man-hours.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP has been operating under the strictest sanitary and restrictive measures. The plant has an emergency action plan in case of adverse changes in the epidemic situation, providing infrastructure and logistical potential to work under lockdown.

‘The pandemic presented us with unexpected challenges, but thanks to the responsibility and professionalism of our colleagues, we worked steadily all the time and ensured reliable and continuous electricity production. We hoped that this difficult period would pass quickly, but after the health crisis a new situation arose that required special attention. Our priority remains to contribute to ensuring the country’s energy security as a proven reliable electricity producer over the years, working entirely with local resources and team. At the same time, we continue to work with all institutional and other partners to contribute to the sustainable transition of the Bulgarian electricity sector,’

Krassimir Nenov, Executive Director of ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3

The power plant, which is one of the largest in the country, produces electricity entirely from local resources – lignite coal, extracted from Maritsa East Mines. ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP fully meets the new, stricter EU environmental requirements, which came into force in August 2021. Following the modernization of the FGDs, the two key installations now provide over 97% efficient sulfur dioxide treatment.

The power plant has been certified for years according to two international standards – ISO 14001: 2015, related to environmental protection, and ISO 45001: 2018 (OHSAS), which concerns health and safety at work, said the company’s press office.
