Shell Bulgaria With First Award for Sustainable Policies

Shell Bulgaria received an award in the Sustainable Policies category in this year’s edition of b2b media’s Greenest Companies in Bulgaria contest. At an official ceremony in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policies and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov, the company was ranked first in the category for its overall commitment to sustainable development.

“We are delighted to have received this high recognition for Shell’s efforts to become a zero net emissions energy business. For us, this is a long-term commitment that includes concrete small steps that we are taking every day in Bulgaria. The road to achieving our ambitious goal is long. It depends on the joint efforts of the business, government, and society in our country.” said Kamelia Slaveykova, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shell Bulgaria.

The expert jury of the b2b media competition considered Shell Bulgaria’s efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its sites’ operations by powering 100% of electricity from renewable energy sources, installing solar panels on rooftops, improving the sites’ energy efficiency by LED lighting and thermostats for refrigerated display cases and heating in the sites, training the staff to improve their awareness of energy efficiency and so on and so forth. Shell Bulgaria’s customers have an alternative for charging electric vehicles at key sites in the country. Corporate customers can benefit from a service to offset carbon emissions generated by their fleet through carbon credit certificates.

Shell Bulgaria’s efforts to protect the environment were also highly appreciated – the company has several waste reduction and recycling activities in this area. Moreover, the company’s employees have volunteered to reforest an 11-acre forest in the Godech area in autumn 2021 and spring 2022.

Shell Bulgaria has a strong commitment to social responsibility. The company is one of the founders of the first ever Bulgarian Diversity Charter, and in recent years has made several social investments in the municipalities of Southeast Bulgaria. Furthermore, during the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, Shell made significant donations to the country’s emergency medical centres and the Bulgarian Red Cross.
The Greenest Companies in Bulgaria competition is being held for the 12th consecutive year. It’s main goals is to recognize and build on the efforts of businesses, municipalities, NGOs and specific individuals to achieve sustainable goals and corporate responsibility strategies. Shell Bulgaria is participating for the first time in 2022.
