ContourGlobal Celebrates 11 Years of Operation on the Bulgarian Market

Eleven-year presence on the Bulgarian market was marked by the international energy company ContourGlobal, which is the majority owner of one of the key capacities in the Maritsa East basin – ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP. So far, the company has invested over BGN 1.46 billion in environmental improvements, modernization, safe operation, and healthy working conditions in its thermal power plant near the town of Galabovo, and over BGN 10 million have been invested in various projects for the benefit of the local community, according to ContourGlobal.

Thanks to large-scale rehabilitation, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP is the first power plant in the region of Southeast Europe to have met the strictest European standards for ecology and safety. After the latest modernization is completed in August 2021, the power plant’s high-tech electro-filters and specialized desulphurization plants fully meet the highest level of requirements under current European legislation. For 12 years, the plant has successfully defended its certificates under international standards for environmental management and health and safety at work, ISO 14000: 2015 and ISO 45001: 2018 (formerly – OHSAS 18001: 2007), informs ContourGlobal.

This month we celebrated 16 million man-hours without accidents – an excellent indicator for an industrial enterprise. We have achieved this thanks to the great team of professionals and the implemented technological improvements. We apply the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance and strive to maintain our facilities in excellent condition so that we can produce the necessary electricity for Bulgarian consumers and business, said Alexander Zhelev, chief engineer of ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP.

With an installed capacity of 908 megawatts, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP is the second largest thermal power plant in Bulgaria, working entirely with local raw materials – 25% of the lignite coal mined in the Maritsa East basin is being used by the power plant. The company provides nearly 500 direct highly-skilled jobs and more than 4,000 additional indirect positions, the company says.

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 owns and operates the first lignite-fired thermal power plant in Southeast Europe, which operates in full compliance with the highest European standards for occupational safety and environmental protection. The plant generates an average of 11% of Bulgaria’s electricity output, using local energy sources, and thus contributes to ensuring energy security and independence of the country. More than BGN 1.4 billion have been invested in ensuring the reliable operation of the power plant and in environmental protection and work safety measures. The shareholders are the international energy company ContourGlobal (73%) and the National Electricity Company (27%).
