ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP Generates More Than 12% of the Country’s Electricity in the First Half of 2022

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP provided 12.3% of the total electricity produced in the country for the period January 1 – June 30, 2022. The amount produced is enough to cover the average 6-month consumption of over 1,300,000 Bulgarian households – almost half of the population of the country.

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP continues to invest in environmental protection measures and fully meets the requirements of European legislation. For 12 years, the power plant has successfully defended its certifications according to the international standards for environmental management and health and safety at work, ISO 14000:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 (before – OHSAS 18001:2007) and has already recorded over 16 million man-hours of accident-free operation.

‘Our power plant is an important part of the country’s electricity system and plays an essential role both in times of high consumption and for the stable operation of the system. And over the past six months, we have proven this, providing reliable and affordable electricity for households and businesses, said Alexander Zhelev, Chief Engineer at ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP.

On June 20, 2022, the ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP began the annual scheduled maintenance of its capacities, which guarantees the efficient and safe operation of the power plant during the winter season, when loads are traditionally greater due to low temperatures and high electricity consumption.

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 owns and operates the first lignite-fired thermal power plant in Southeast Europe, which operates in full compliance with the highest European standards for labor safety and environmental protection. The power plant produces on average 10% of the electricity in Bulgaria using local energy sources and thus contributes to ensuring the energy security and independence of the country. Over BGN 1.4 billion has been invested to ensure the power plant’s reliable operation and measures to protect the environment and guarantee work safety. The shareholders are the international energy company ContourGlobal (73%) and the National Electric Company (27%).
