ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP With Production Record for the First Six Months of the Year

Record production for the first 6 months of 2022 – 24% more than the same period in 2021

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP marks its highest half-yearly net electricity production for the last 10 years. The record production for the first 6 months of 2022 was 24% more than the same period in 2021 and exceeded the previous production record by 11%. The extreme hot weather has increased the demand for cooling energy in hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. Such over-consumption creates a critical load on the country’s electricity system, but at the same time once again proves the crucial importance of the power plants in the Maritsa East complex to guarantee the security of supply of affordable electricity from independent local sources.

For the first half of 2022, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP provided 12.3% of total electricity produced in the country – enough to cover the average consumption of over 1,300,000 Bulgarian households, or almost half of the population of the country.

“Our plant is an important part of Bulgaria’s electricity system and this is an extraordinary responsibility. We continue to work to guarantee the energy security of the country in this period of serious challenges not only for our country, but also for the whole of Europe. We are doing everything necessary to keep the capacities in excellent condition so that we can continue to work efficiently and safely even in the most critical months,” said Alexander Zhelev, Chief Engineer at ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP.

On June 20, 2022, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP began the annual scheduled maintenance of its capacities without halting operation. This guarantees the efficient and safe operation of the power plant during the winter season, when loads are traditionally greater due to low temperatures and high electricity consumption.

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 owns and operates the first lignite-fired thermal power plant in Southeast Europe, which works in full compliance with the highest European standards for occupational safety and environmental protection. The power plant generates an average 10% of Bulgaria’s electricity output using local energy sources, and thus contributes to guaranteeing the energy security and independence of the country. Over BGN 1.4 billion have been invested in ensuring the reliable operation of the power plant and in environmental protection and work safety measures. The shareholders are the international energy company ContourGlobal (73%) and the National Electric Company (27%).
