Bidding Farewell to Ambassador Mustafa: Discussion with AmCham Members on the Strategic Outlook for Transformation and Growth of Bulgaria

Today, February 14, 2023, AmCham Bulgaria and H.E. Herro Mustafa, U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria, discussed the strategic outlook for Bulgaria’s transformation and growth by sharing a common vision for building up both countries’ partnership. The event took place at Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia and welcomed more than 160 guests from the Chamber’s membership.

Moments to Remember

Over the past three and a half years we enjoyed the company and collaborated with a great friend of Bulgaria. Ambassador Mustafa’s determination, dedication, result-oriented approach, and energy inspired many in the country. We are glad that among those groups of people and organizations was AmCham Bulgaria,” said Olivier Marquette, AmCham Bulgaria President, at the opening.

He enlisted some of the highlights of the activities that the Chamber completed together with Ambassador Mustafa and her team during her tenure.

  • 2019 – During the Official Visit of the then Bulgarian Prime Minister to the United States, and the meeting with the then U.S. President, AmCham Bulgaria co-organized together with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce a business roundtable of 14 American corporations with the Bulgarian delegation.
  • 2020United Against Covid-19 Campaign that was implemented together by the U.S. Embassy, America for Bulgaria, and the Bulgarian Donors Forum. Thanks mainly to the AmCham members, the campaign collected more than 1 million leva which were transparently distributed among 112 organizations across the country.
  • 2021 The Three Seas Initiative and Business Forum – at which AmCham Bulgaria and the U.S. Embassy helped a lot in creating the agenda of the 3SI Business Forum, and working as true partners of the Bulgarian institutions in energy and diversification, digital transformation, and connectivity, and innovation.
  • 2022 – United with Ukraine Initiative – right after the outbreak of the unjustified war of Russia against Ukraine, the U.S. Embassy, America for Bulgaria, Nu Boyana Film Studios, the American University in Bulgaria, the American College of Sofia, and many AmCham members joined forces to help the Ukrainians that came to Bulgaria to seek shelter and rescue.
  • The Rule of Law Topic – AmCham and the U.S. Embassy held and organized a series of joint meetings, webinars, and training on the FCPA to raise awareness of the topic and its importance. The recent peak was the Ambassador’s remarks during the joint conference ‘Rule of Law and Business Environment in Bulgaria”, on January 20th, 2023, at which she spoke openly about the lack of progress in this area.

“We were honored to have Ambassador Mustafa at an AmCham event with members as her first public event in Bulgaria. Today’s event creates a symbolic “closure” of the Ambassador’s tenure with AmCham Bulgaria. We value this a great deal, and look forward to continuing this important partnership with the next U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria,” pointed out Olivier Marquette.

Speaking about symbols, Olivier Marquette pointed out that such events build bridges in many ways: first between the Chamber and its members, then between the U.S. Ambassadors and their agendas, and last but not least – to the various stakeholders of the American community here in Bulgaria that is strong because they are united.

“There’s so much the United States and Bulgaria have accomplished together over the past several years, particularly to advance our commercial and economic relationship.  I’m proud of the work we have done with the AmCham to support U.S. business interests and to promote a better business environment that will attract more and varied investments, thus creating a more economically secure future for Bulgaria,” said Ambassador Herro Mustafa in her remarks to the AmCham audience today.
