“ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP Marked 14 years Since the Completion of Its Modernization

One of the largest power plants in Bulgaria, “ConturGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP, marked 14 years since completing the modernization of its facilities. This was announced by the press center of the company. They specify that the investments made so far in greening, safe and reliable operation are worth BGN 1.5 billion. After their implementation, the power plant has significantly improved its indicators and continues working under the stricter European requirements for environmental protection.

From 2009 till now, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP has reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by 97 percent and dust emissions – by 99.96 percent. Currently, the power plant treats 100 percent of the wastewater generated and has a 30,000-cubic-meter buffer pool for water reuse.

“ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” thermal power plant is one of the few modernized power plants in our country that meet the highest level of the European Union’s environmental requirements. This assigns us an extremely responsible role in safeguarding the stability of the country’s electricity system. We feel satisfied that we contribute to the energy security of the country and the region in a period full of challenges. We work entirely with local lignite coal from “Maritsa-East Mines” and thereby contribute to the energy independence of the country,” says Alexander Zhelev, chief engineer at the power plant.

As BTA already wrote, in 2022, the power plant provided over 12 percent of the total electricity produced in the country – an amount sufficient to cover the average annual needs of more than 1,300,000 of the households in the country. Last year “ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3” TPP has recorded the highest net production in its history. The power plant can change its mode of operation from minimum to maximum power multiple times during the day – a flexibility that proves crucial with the entry of more and more RES generation capacities.
