JDE PEET’S Invests €5 Million to Expand Kostinbrod Coffee Plant’s Roasting and Packing Capacities

In 2024, the coffee plant estimates a remarkable 25% increase in production output and furthers its sustainability agenda

JDE PEET’S, a global coffee and tea company, today proudly announces a significant expansion of the Kostinbrod Coffee Plant’s operational capacities with a €5 million investment focused on enhancing roasting capacity and packing capability. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to meet growing consumer demand and ushering efficiency, resilience, and innovation. With a focus on enhancing production capacity while minimizing environmental impact, the company’s latest initiatives prove its unwavering commitment to excellence and sustainability. In 2024, the coffee plant estimates a remarkable 25% increase in production output.

The facility is serving 18 markets including Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Baltics, Austria, and Great Britain. It offers a diverse range of 85 finished goods products, from 20 coffee origins. Now it boasts a team of almost 100 associates and 10 new working positions were opened as part of the expansion efforts, further bolstering employment opportunities and economic growth in the region.
Through targeted measures, Kostinbrod Coffee Plant successfully reduces the CO2 emission of its roaster by 16%, along with a significant reduction of NOx emission by over 60%. Furthermore, the achieved reduction of CO2 emissions is 350-430 tons per year, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

One of the pivotal technological advancements and sustainable practices implemented includes the installation of 820 solar panels on the plant’s roof, effectively harnessing solar energy to fulfil 12% of its total energy needs, thereby decreasing dependency on non-renewable energy sources. In addition, the plant harnesses energy from 100% renewable sources, further reducing its environmental footprint and promoting a greener future. Emphasizing its dedication to environmental stewardship, the company achieves a significant milestone by producing zero landfill waste.

Moreover, the plant introduces a new type thermal afterburner with built-in highly efficient heat recovery. This innovation not only ensures reliable odour destruction but also maximizes energy efficiency by harnessing waste heat for productive use. With a focus on reducing energy consumption, the company minimizes energy loss through advanced insulation incorporated into its roasting system. In a strategic move towards enhancing environmental sustainability, the company opts for a superior gas cleaning system for its new roaster, surpassing traditional catalytic afterburner methods. This decision underscores the coffee plant’s commitment to minimizing its carbon footprint.

To celebrate the expansion, the company invited H.E. US Ambassador, Mr. Kenneth Merten and H.E. The Netherlands Ambassador, Mr. Simon van der Burg, as well as the Mayor of Kostinbrod, Mr. Trayko Mladenov and Mrs. Mila Nenova, Executive Director of InvestBulgaria Agency, to take a tour of the facilities, along with selected JDE leaders and other members from the Bulgarian diplomatic & business community.

“These advancements represent a significant leap forward for Kostinbrod Coffee Plant as we continue to prioritize innovation, sustainability, and excellence in all facets of our operations,” commented Ivan Ivanov, Plant Manager Kostinbrod. “By leveraging cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, we’re not just increasing efficiency, but also ensuring that we can continue to deliver high-quality products to the market. This investment demonstrates JDE’s dedication to growth and excellence in the coffee industry.”
