On April 29, 2025, AmCham Bulgaria was honored to take part in the Westinghouse Supplier Symposium, which brought together more than 150 representatives from 60 Bulgarian companies and industry organizations. The event is part of Westinghouse Electric Company’s commitment to local engagement in preparation for the construction of Unit 7 at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant – a landmark project that will introduce the first AP1000® nuclear reactor in Europe.
Held just one day after the third round of Memorandum of Understanding signings between Westinghouse and Bulgarian suppliers, the symposium provided a vital platform for local businesses to learn more about the project’s scope, procurement needs, and technology requirements. As a long-standing advocate for deepening U.S.-Bulgarian commercial relations, AmCham welcomes Westinghouse’s continued efforts to integrate local expertise into this strategic energy initiative.
The event opened with remarks from high-level institutional and business leaders. Zhecho Stankov, Minister of Energy, emphasized the government’s determination to deliver this project successfully, highlighting its potential to set a standard for future development in Europe. He also pointed to the important synergies between nuclear energy and data infrastructure.
Delyan Dobrev, Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Finance, described the Kozloduy expansion as the beginning of a nuclear renaissance for Europe, with Bulgaria well-positioned to play a leadership role in decarbonization and energy diversification.
Susan Falatko, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy, reaffirmed the United States’ strong support for the project, citing its significance for regional prosperity and energy independence.
Speaking on behalf of AmCham Bulgaria, CEO Ivan Mihaylov stressed the importance of the Kozloduy project for Bulgaria’s economy, innovation ecosystem, and educational institutions. He also reiterated the Chamber’s commitment to promoting sustainable, high-value investments in strategic sectors such as energy.
Additional remarks were delivered by Rumen Radev, Chairman of BICA, who called for maximizing local participation in the construction phase; Petyo Ivanov, Executive Director of Kozloduy NPP New Build, who outlined the roadmap to the groundbreaking; and Sean Jones of Westinghouse, who reaffirmed the company’s intent to build the project in close cooperation with Bulgarian partners.
The symposium included detailed presentations on equipment and service needs, supply chain opportunities, and the unique features of the AP1000® technology. The event was moderated by Daniel Kiryakov, PMP, and organized by M3 Communications Group, Inc.
