Enery officially inaugurated the Nova Zagora Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), marking a major milestone for Bulgaria’s energy transition and regional energy security. The project, with a capacity of 150 MW / 601 MWh, is the largest standalone battery storage facility in the country, and one of the most significant projects of its kind in Europe.

The opening ceremony gathered representatives from the energy sector, financial institutions, technology providers, and local authorities to celebrate the successful delivery of a project that sets a new benchmark for energy infrastructure in the region.

The Nova Zagora BESS was developed in less than one year and represents a landmark achievement for the regional renewable energy market. The facility will play a critical role in supporting grid flexibility, integrating renewable energy, and enhancing the stability of Bulgaria’s electricity system.

The project was financed through a pioneering green financing structure backed by a partnership with Vitol, creating a first-of-its-kind financing model for battery storage in the region. The project financing was supported by DSK Bank (OTP Group), while Sunotec served as the EPC contractor, and Sungrow supplied battery technology.

The Nova Zagora BESS will provide critical balancing services to the electricity grid and support the accelerated integration of renewable energy sources across Southeast Europe. As battery storage becomes increasingly important for energy systems worldwide, the project positions Bulgaria as a leading regional market for innovative clean energy solutions.
