The regional online media outlet Blagoevgrad News jointly with the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) has launched a video rubric „Inside of AUBG“. For the purpose the team of the online news website visits the university looking for inspiring stories in the diverse community of the renowned university.
The first edition of „Inside of AUBG“ featured an interview with Dr. Steven Sullivan, AUBG President. Dr. Sullivan has been a longstanding member of the AUBG community, and in March 2017 was appointed AUBG Acting President. Blagoevgrad News interviewed him during the traditional International Week at the university, a get-together during which students and faculty present the cultures and traditions of their home countries.
In the interview Dr. Sullivan identified as a core challenge of AUBG the effort to attract the right students to educate – with excellent English language skills, curiosity and ambition. AUBG encourages students to discover their genuine interests and develop them, Dr. Sullivan explained. “Curiosity is what we are looking for in students”, he noted and added that this is inherent in the American system liberal arts. The AUBG President highlighted the high quality American education combined with much lower tuition fees than the ones charged in the United States. In the meantime, AUBG has developed scholarship programs in support of talented students. The AUBG President pointed out the great diversity of nationalities among both students and faculty: apart from many Bulgarians there are large groups of students from Albania, Georgia, Mongolia, etc. Recently there are more students enrolled from Vietnam, Russia, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo. AUBG is a home of Erasmus students who come from Spain, Holland and Germany. An increasing number of students who want to complete their Bachelor’s degree at AUBG come from America.

Following Dr. Sullivan’s video interview, “Inside of AUBG” on Blagoevgrad News included a report from the AUBG International Week. Faculty and students from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, the United States and Palestine told the audience how they presented the culture and traditions of their countries.
