AmCham Bulgaria and University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy Exchange Academic-Business Know-how

On February 8, 2024, AmCham Bulgaria had the opportunity to visit the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM).

The working visit was hosted by Prof. Dr. Senya Terzieva, Rector of UCTM, who acquainted the guests with the history, mission, and development plans of the university.

Ivan Mihaylov, CEO, and Daniel Kiryakov, Communications & Public Affairs Manager, were introduced to polymer engineering by Prof. Dishovsky, as well as to the circular economy and deep processing of raw materials activities in the university by assoc. Peshev, Deputy Rector for scientific activities and international cooperation. Petko Krastev, Manager for Bulgaria, Dow Chemicals Gmbh, also took part in the visit.

Among the highlights of the meeting was the building and subsequent development of academic education and scientific experience with business and the practical application of scientific developments.

“For AmCham, building stronger links between business and higher education is important. We need an even more productive dialogue with both the Ministry of Education and the business sector, and alongside this, we need to work to create links between Bulgarian universities and universities in the US and Canada. Along with the use of EU funds, we need to think about a more pragmatic development of public-private partnerships, resulting in industries getting ideas for new alloys, and materials, more efficient use of resources, and the development of a low-carbon economy as a whole,” said Ivan Mihaylov.

“We are happy that such a meeting took place at the idea of one of our members, who is also an alumnus of UCTM,” he added.

“Since its establishment, the university has oriented its activities in the direction of supporting the industry, both with staff development and in the field of technological provision and innovation. It is the partnership with employer organizations that enables UCTM to pursue its mission – relevant educational programs and research in business-relevant areas.”, shared Prof. Terzieva

The two sides committed to looking together for ways to further convergence between the industries directly related to UCTM, as well as to encourage young people to choose engineering specialties that can provide them with knowledge, employment, and a future in Bulgaria.
